Japanese Woodblock Print Sites

  • Ukiyo-e: The Pictures of the Floating World -- Hans Olof Johanssen's site is a great place to start.

  • Woodblock.com -- explore this fascinating introduction to Japanese woodblock prints from the perspective of woodblock printmaker David Bull.

  • Viewing Japanese Prints -- John Fiorillo provides an excellent introduction to the genre of Japanese woodblock prints: Ukiyo-e, Shin Hanga, Sosaku Hanga. Be sure to see his articles on fading illustrated with photographs!

  • Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF) -- The deYoung Museum and The Legion of Honor have posted approximately 3,000 Japanese woodblock (woodcut) images here. Try the Thinker ImageBase search engine with a search for "Japan woodcut".

  • ShinHanga.net -- For collectors of Shin Hanga. Have fun!

  • Ukiyoe-gallery.com -- This gallery has several hundred prints exhibited on line, strong in Shin Hanga, an amazing exhibit of Kuchi-e, Meiji era artists, including Chikanobu and Yoshitoshi, Sosaku Hanga, and the classic Edo period -- old prints, new prints and reproductions. Be sure to check the Library for some fascinating articles.

  • Hagi Uragami Museum -- offers an on-line exhibit of several Hokusai Sketchbooks, including the 3 book (ehon) series One Hundred Views of Fuji. Explore the extensive collection of Yoshitoshi's 32 Aspects of Beauties and Chikanobu's True Beauties.   • DynamicDrive.com -- Java applets, Javascript, DHTML for all sorts of computer toys. Many free.

  • FreeExtractor -- slick little program by Andrew Fawcett converts zip files into self-extracting executables, adding only 26kb to the file size. Allows customization with introductory text, icons, shortcut creation, run on execution, etc. Free.

  • gPhotoShow -- A screensaver with many different transition effects for displaying your favorite images. Free.

  • The Unofficial IconPax Archive -- for Windows95/98/2000. Change Windows icons with this simple installation package. Free.

  • IrfanView -- for Windows 95/98/ME, WinNT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. IrfanView is a very fast 32-Bit graphic viewer and image convertor written by Irfan Skiljan. Works with very little overhead. Freeware for non-commercial or educational uses. Register for commercial use.

  • XrX AddBar -- For Windows 95/98/ME. This little utility adds an animated graduated color bar to your selected images to create an animated start up logo for Windows 95/98/ME. Karl McMurdo also provides a large collection of free Windows 95/98/ME start up logos and related software. Free.
